The idea and talk of some upcoming photo projects revitalized some interest in bringing out the old camera. My newly painted (white!) walls didn’t make it difficult to find a place to do this. Being back at home for the summer, this new space has already proven to be a perfect hiding spot for both naps, and to get some work done.
Hello again tumblr friends who are still hanging around here! Throwing in this one last post of for the year in the crazy hours of the night. Looped around Calgary with a camera to be introduced to some of the most perfect hidden areas, and scoped out a couple more. Super frozen toes resulted, but sacrifices are always made somehow on adventure days. Revisiting these places in milder weather is a must.
Last evening spent in Calgary before starting the roadtrip back to school, catching the sunset at an empty parking deck. Almost my favorite time of the year for sunsets. Couple more weeks and they’re all just perfect.
Actually sitting in the car on day two of the drive as I’m writing this. I guess I didn’t properly recall how bumpy the highways actually were, as its making sketching pretty impossible right now.
It’s hard to believe this tradition Aman and I have of wandering the city with cameras and crazy stories is almost three years old now. Started out at a new location which I kept referring to as our own mini beach before revisiting an old favourite. Despite the fact that the cute bridge was a bit grown over with trees, and there may have been a wasps nest in the little cove area, this spot still had all the charm it did the first time we stumbled across it.
Casual evening date with graphite turned into late night impulse illustrations with watercolours. Might spend my last couple weeks before classes making a series out of this - if the idea manages to keep my attention long enough.
Couldn’t take a trip to Peru without visiting Machu Picchu. The awestruck feeling you get walking around this place is just unreal. Nothing that seeing pictures can ever recreate. Its one of those places that pictures can’t do justice to.
Uros Floating Islands, where the people build islands from scratch to live on.
Left a piece of my heart in Peru a the end of the trip. The soles finally gave way. Loved these boots to no ends. The search for a replacement for these begins now.
Part two of just a fraction of the shots taken while perusing Peru. I have to say, even with a few complications here and there the trip was completely amazing. If these photos capture even a fraction of the experiences I had there, I would be pretty happy. Fell in love with the friendly people, the coffee (nothing will ever be the same), and the never ending photogenic views.
Packing for Peru, for ten days of nonstop sketching and photo taking and all that other great travel stuff. Also (kind of) putting off packing by starting to sketch in a new book, because the fresh pages are just so tempting. Spending the last few hours in Calgary loading up on sketching inspiration and music for the plane. We’ll see what interesting creations come out at the end of the twelve+ hour travel day!
Paid a visit to the backroads of the middle of nowhere, and ventured off onto sideroads that had previously been closed off (or never existed..). Recently it seems i’ve traded out my love for black with lighter shades and opting for white on white more often. The weather has been making it pretty easy to make the decision though, given how warm its been as of late.
Today we found ourselves wandering the middle of the city, through narrow alleyways and around some of the cutest sidewalks. Even managed to run into some interesting characters where we were (almost) scared for our lives. Side note: come up with an excuse/exit plan and fake name for next time…
Always a fun time with this girl, no matter where we decide to go!
After spending the entire day at Starbucks cramming prob/stats, took an evening break wandering around the neighbourhood. So many pop up torrential downpours have happened recently, so of course, one happened this evening too. Inevitably, we got soaked trying to get out of the rain. Nothing better than the way the pavement glows after a storm.
Loving this sequined skirt by Urban Philosophy. It really caught my eye because of the AllSaints esque feel to it (drooling over those skirts too!). It makes for such a simple way to mix gold and silver, or just give you lots of options because of the gold and silver sparkles. And who doesn’t love a pop of sparkle? Please be sure to check out their website, as they have so many other perfect pieces!
And the wonderful team at Urban Philosophy offered you guys something too!
Finished this painting a couple days back, but just got around to getting some photos of it today! If you have seen my Instagram, you may have seen a preview of this already. This one is sort of reminiscent of the first oil painting I ever painted back in 2009 for art IB.. which i’ll bring back from the dead, here:
Pulled this belt out from the back of my closet when doing a bit of cleaning! Its actually my belt that I wore for horse shows a couple years back when I used to do horse jumping competitions! I loved the pattern and color of it though, so i’m super glad it still fits (as a waist belt - no hope in wearing it as a regular belt anymore, unless i’m an 8 year old twig).
Interesting side fact: if you look closely enough, you can see a hint of a scar on my back that happened last year. Oh, I loved the dorms (thanks detachable ladders!).
Last memories of the super long and ombred hair. Chopped the ends off since this photo! I did really love the lightened tips of my hair before though, so I did end up slightly ombreing the new haircut as well. Going to wait for my hair to grow out a bit more, and I may lighten the tips once more again!
Spent one of my last days back in Calgary with some of my favorite people. Went for some Thai food on 17th, and followed up with coffee. Then I (finally) got to check out the Peace Bridge. Can’t believe I haven’t gone to see it before! The lights and everything are spectacular at night. The wind picked up when we were there though, so it was absolutely freezing. I’ll have to make a point to go back there sometime when its warmer.
But on that note, Calgary really has been too cold (or i’m just a weakling now… hmm). Blankets have been my best friends recently. I guess this is it telling me that its time to head south again.
Back in Peoria in a couple days! Here’s to hoping I still have enough time to keep up with blogging frequently while back at school.
Sketchbook doodles! One thing that I love so much about them is that they’re a great way to occupy a few hours and just let my mind wander.
One week left of winter break until I head back to school. I’ve been throwing all this free time i’ve had so far into drawing and painting. Just finished an oil painting (which is the first painting i’ve done since graduating high school!), and actually immediately started another one the day after. Feels like its going to be difficult to switch my brain back in to a numbers/math mindset for when my classes start up again since its been so much on the artsy side recently!
First time painting again since finishing Art IB in highschool. Its been a while! The interesting thing though, is that even though I haven’t done any paintings since high school, I can still see some growth comparing this piece to my old work.
Started this painting this a couple weeks ago, and made decent progress in just a couple days at was pretty much at a completion point. But then I hit a roadblock, and wasn’t pleased with anything I did with the background, so I left it for about two weeks. Ideas just came to mind today again, so I spent a couple hours this afternoon finishing it up. I am actually very pleased with the outcome!
I’ve gotten so much use out of these lace shorts over the past few months, and the quality of them has kept up well. They are just so easy to pair with things. They’re my default go-to item for weekends out, since they’re so versatile. Also nice because they won’t accidentally slide up like bandage skirts when you’re out! Definitely a must have!
Back home to more wintertime exploring Calgary with Steven! Sometimes the most unexpected places turned out to be the best places for shots. Calgary is sometimes pretty cool when you don’t expect it. Lots of fun with reflections, glass, and trains!
We took so many photos (a majority of which actually were good shots too), so it was a challenge to sort through and pick out my favorites!
Assortment of random photos and things i took that didn’t really fit in anywhere else from the roadtrip.
Love you, sunsets & skylines!
